A STERN TEST FOR ROHR OVER EAGLES GOALKEEPING CRISIS
Nigeria is known for producing top quality goalkeepers, but, in recent time following the acrimonious retirement of Vincent Enyeama from International Football, and Subsequent health challenges of Carl Ikeme, the Super Eagles has been engulfed in goalkeepers’ crisis.
The quality of goalkeepers at the disposal of Coach Gernot Rohr is a worrying source of concern. Though, Daniel Akpeyi has been tested, but his performances judging by the number of matches he’s played, does not inspire confidence nor make him a reliable and permanent option for the Eagles.
Also, Ikechukwu Ezenwa, an home based goalkeeper with Eyimba of Aba, is another probable option in between the Sticks. That is; if his performances in the Russia 2018 World Cup qualifying matches is anything to by. Francis Uzoho, a young goalkeeper that plies his trade with Laliga side, Deportivo La Coruna of Spain, is an upcoming goalkeeping prospect. He showed flashes of brilliance in the International friendly against Argentina. He also showed promising signs with solid performances against Serbia and Poland in the last International fixtures.
As Russia 2018 beckons, the decision of who will be the undisputed number one shot stopper lies with Coach Gernot Rohr, and, he surely has the magic wand to bring out the best out of these goalkeepers so that Nigerians can go to sleep with their eyes closed without having to constantly worry over the issue of an unreliable goalkeeper in between the sticks. Or on the other hand, after the Russia 2018 World Cup finals, the coaching crew can comb the domestic football scene for capable goal minders who will give the available national team goalkeepers stiff competition. Gernot Rohr has to work assiduously on this so as to eventually solve our goalkeeping crisis.
