Ten-man Bayer Leverkusen beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 to earn first points in UEFA Champions League group stage on Wednesday.

An own-goal from Thomas in the first half and Kevin Volland’s goal gave Leverkusen small hope of making it to the round of 16.

Nadiem Amiri got a red card at the 84th minute for fouling Atletico’s Santiago Arias, reducing Leverkusen to a ten- man squad.

Eventually, Alvaro Morata scored a late goal for Atletico Madrid and could have equalised with a second had Lukas Hradecky not saved it in the last play of the game.

“It was important to stay compact against a team like Atlético Madrid. We did very well today,” Leverkusen coach Peter Bosz said.

Atletico Madrid is second in Group D with 7 points after Juventus who won Lokomotiv Moscow 2-1 earlier on Wednesday.

Leverkusen is third and share 3 points with Lokomotiv Moscow who are fourth in the group.
