Carlos Soler scored the leading goal for Chelsea before Valencia’s Mateo Kovacic levelled two minutes later.
Christian Pulisic scored a controversial goal for Chelsea which was awarded by VAR, putting the Blues within touching distance of qualification.
But Daniel Wass momentarily put a stop to it by scoring a totally unexpected goal disguised as a cross.
Chelsea also suffered a blow as Tammy Abraham was carried off the pitch after he was injured from a fall on an opponent.
But there is still hope for the Blues to qualify for the last 16 as they have same 8 points with Valencia in Group H while Ajax are top of the group with 10 points after beating Lille 2-0.
Next, Chelsea will host Chelsea host West Ham United at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League on Saturday and play against Lille on December 10.
Valencia will welcome Villarreal in La Liga match on Saturday as well.
