Former Arsenal manager, Unai Emery has congratulated fellow Spaniard, Mikel Arteta, saying the club made a good decision to appoint him as head coach.

Emery was sacked last month for his poor performance in leading the team to seven winless games this season.

The 48-year-old Spaniard spoke to BBC Sport in his first interview since leaving Arsenal after 18 months as head coach.

“He really is prepared to make that next jump,” said Emery.

“He has been at Arsenal before, he’s been in the Premier League and he has been working with Pep Guardiola. I do believe this is a good decision and I would also like it to be a good decision.”

Mikel Arteta was in Manchester City as an assistant before he was appointed Arsenal’s new head coach on Friday.

He will begin duties as head coach on Sunday after Gunners premier league match against Everton.
