Atalanta condemned AC Milan to their heaviest defeat in 21 years by thrashing them 5-0 in Italian Serie A on Sunday.

Alejandro Gomez scored a stunning opener in the 10th minute after maneuvering past Andrea Conti.

Mario Pasalic scored the second goal in the second half while Josip Ilicic scored twice shortly after. Then Luis Muriel scored to make it 5-0.

AC Milan have not conceded five goals in any competition since their 5-0 defeat to Roma in 1998.

The Rossoneri are 10th on Serie A table and could spend Christmas in the bottom half if Sassuolo or Bologna win later on Sunday.

Milan’s third manager in 2019, Stefano Pioli, expressed his disappointment in his team’s performance saying “this cannot be the real Milan”.

“We approached the match in the wrong way and you just can’t afford to do that against this team,” he said.

“Today’s performance was seriously insufficient. I expected a reaction from us in the second half but it didn’t come. In fact we were even worse.”

Meanwhile, Atalanta who have already qualified for Champions League last 16, have now climbed to 5th in Serie A.
