Real Madrid dropped two points behind Barcelona after their disappointing goalless home draw against Athletic Club in their last La Liga match for 2019 on Sunday.
The hosts who were praised for their performance in El Clasico against Barcelona on 18 December, couldn’t replicate same on Sunday to at least score a goal.
Los Blancos dominated the game most of the time with Toni Kroos’ shot hitting the crossbar in the first half and Kareem Benzema denied scoring on several occasions.
Athletic goalkeeper Unai Simon made other several crucial saves against Real Madrid and not even Sergio Ramos’ rebound from Nacho’s header which hit the bar, could go past the Spaniard.
Athletic who were clearly trailing behind Real in terms of performance made a few attempts to score to no avail.
Inaki Williams’ low shot was saved by Thibaut Courtois in the first half and Kenan Kodro’s goal was ruled out as an offside.
Real made a final desperate attempt to score through substitute Luka Jovic’s powerful header but it seemed the god of soccer was just not there for Los Blancos as the ball couldn’t hit the net.
So, both Real Madrid and Athletic Club ended the game with a point each. The draw means Real has finished year 2019 second with two points behind leaders, Barcelona.
Athletic Club are 7th, two points behind sixth-placed Getafe.
