Tottenham suffered their first defeat of the Year when Southampton’s Danny Ings scored a brilliant only goal in premier league New Year’s Day match.
The striker flicked the ball superbly over Toby Alderweireld before shooting his ninth goal in ten premier league matches past Paulo Gazzaniga into Spurs net.
Mourihno’s side were largely unimpressive as they missed several chances to score, particularly Jan Vertonghen missing their best chance in the first half.
Harry Kane left the pitch due to injury after a goal was disallowed in the second half.
Southampton also claimed a penalty against Alderweireld for handball early in the second half, but the referee, backed by VAR, refused to acknowledge it.
Mourihno was shown a yellow card as well for going over to speak with opponents’ coaching staff.
Tottenham are sixth in premier league while Southampton gave climbed to 11th.
Next, Spurs visit Middlesbrough for FA cup third round on Sunday, 5 January and host Liverpool on 11 January.
Saints will host Huddersfield Town in the FA Cup on Saturday and visit Leicester City a week later.
