Chelsea coach of Nigerian descent, Eddie Newton, is getting set to join Mikel Obi’s Trabzonspor after reaching an agreement with the Turkish side.

According to Turkish newspaper Hurriyet, Newton is expected to arrive at Trabzon this week for the final round of talks with Trabzonspor bosses.

The 48-year-old will start working as the second assistant of Huseyin Cimsir in the technical team if an agreement is reached.

Newton, who was a former midfielder at Chelsea and also famous for scoring in the 1997 FA Cup final, is currently an assistant to Frank Lampard at Stamford Bridge.

He was Chelsea’s loan player technical coach between 2016 and 2019 where he worked with Ola Aina, Kenneth Omeruo, Victor Moses, Ike Ugbo, Tammy Abraham and Fikayo Tomori before he was promoted to assistant coach.

Newton coached Mikel Obi when the player was at Chelsea under managers Roberto Di Matteo and Guus Hiddink in 2012 and 2016 respectively.
