Nigerian midfielder Alex Iwobi was left out of Everton’s squad who defeated Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 in an away premier league match on Sunday.

Spurs boss Jose Mourihno also made history by losing his first opening matchday of a league season in his managerial career.

Three summer signings James Rodriguez, Allan and Abdoulaye made their debut under boss Carlos Ancelloti.

Everton had their first big chance in the 16th minute when Richarlison got the ball and made it past Hugo Lloris but somehow missed target.

Spurs had their first big opportunity at the 33rd minute when Heung-Min Son crossed the ball to Dele Alli whose shot was smartly saved by Jordan Pickford.

Pickford once again denied Spurs following excellent link-up play in the area between Harry Kane and Matt Doherty, three minutes to the end of first half.

However, it was Dominic Calvert-Lewin who got the only goal of the game in the second half from Lucas Digne’s sensational cross after rising above Eric Dier to plant a header.

Everton could have consolidated their win with more goals but Richarlison was guilty of wasting good chances.

Spurs tried hard to equalise but were blocked by Everton’s defense.

Everton have now climbed to fifth position while Spurs are 17th.
