Cristiano Ronaldo missed a crucial penalty that would have edged Juventus closer to the top of Serie A as an equalizer from stubborn Atalanta forced the Champions to a draw on Wednesday.
Juve started the game on a very bright note and were rewarded with an opener from Federico Chiesa who was assisted by Rodrigo Bentancur in the 29th minute.
However, Atalanta made the first shot on target in the 7th minute when Matteo Pessina’a shot was saved by Wojciech Szczesny.
Ronaldo made several efforts to double the lead for the hosts but somehow it remained 1-0 at half-time.
Atalanta began putting Juve under pressure in the second half and their persistence paid off in the 57th minute when Remo Freuler rifled home from outside the area to make it 1-1.
Ronaldo eventually got his chance for a much sought after lead when Chiesa was brought down in the area with the centre referee pointing to the spot.
But goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini denied the Portuguese striker’s shot and Juve were forced to end the game on a disappointing note.
